The Sweet and Sour Variety Hour is a one-hour anything-goes festival of sound-good. Every Wednesday morning for 10 years, CHLY 101.7FM listeners in over 40 coastal communities have been subject to the audiocratic whims of local weirdo, Ashta. From 8-9am, she privately relishes the technical reality that terrestrial radio waves saturate a portion of the Earth’s surface with frequencies of her choosing.

This week is no different. Only she’s asking you to follow the @ssvhradio account on Instagram

Independent Woman About the World

CHLY 101.7FM is like your badass next-door neighbour who unabashedly plays their music too loud and who you refer to in times of crises for advice. You switch to it when the overbearing snarky commercials of the other radio stations become too much to handle. It is at times your sonic refuge, and at other times a quaint slice of your community you can tip your head to.

The truth of the matter is that CHLY doesn’t suckle at the commercial radio teat to bolster its survival. It’s an independent woman about the world, making the ends meet where she can! Unsullied and raw, she tells it like it is, because she answers to No Man. Her health and survival depend on donations and meager levies.

In all seriousness: we cannot live in a world informed by the corporate media only. We need independent, critical-thinking views and reporting through a financially-healthy community-based media like CHLY. Only you can prevent an extinction, by ponying up a tiny bit every month. Spend the 5 minutes to sign up for an automatic monthly donation here.

Good as Gold

I posted a few weeks ago about how I create the Sweet and Sour Variety Hour. I said “I spend thousands of hours making this radio show for you ungrateful plebs, and the least you could do is give the radio station some money!” or something. Maybe my recollection is not so kind, but that was the gist. This week (like every week) the music is good, and I dont feel the need to explain myself.

This is the file which aired on CHLY 101.7FM on Wednesday September 22nd 2021.

Trillions of living beings were awash in the invisible radio waves of these songs. I’m not over exaggerating. It’s literally how terrestrial radio works. The invisible frequency waves were riding along on the ferry. They were in your hair. They were mingling with the dust under your bed. The radio waves slid along the skins of the J Pod orcas as they swam in the cold sea. This was the vibe:

  • Wood Goss & Secret Bad Boy, Black Winged Stilt
  • Nico – These Days
  • Daniel Johnston – True Love Will Find You in the End
  • The Concretes – Miss You
  • Jaakko Eino Kalevi – Hush Down
  • Chris Bear- Gatsby Intro
  • The Orb, Lee Scratch Perry – Golden Clouds
  • LA Priest – Oino
  • Mcbaise – Le jardin
  • Francoise de Roubaix – Les Amis – Actual Magic Remix
  • Tony Allen (feat. Damon Albarn) – Go Back
  • Pete Drake – Forever
  • Nanaimo Chronicles : Michelle Corfield, Liberal Party of Canada
  • Yeah Yeah Yeah’s – No No No
  • Sheer Mag, Fan the Flames
  • Fruit Bats, Gold Past Life
  • Monster Rally, Menagerie
  • Tik Tok on the Radio: Brooksie, Not Into You & @NerdyAboutNeature on valuing our old growth forests

Curation Nation

Every week I screen albums and artists that seem like a good fit for The Sweet and Sour Variety Hour. Whenever I hear a song that catches me, I do whatever it takes to find out who it is, and mark it to be included in this week’s radio offering. Often a theme or a certain sound ends up dominating the hour. Once I have enough music, I fuss over which order they will play, and how I will shape the mood of the listener. Over the past ten years, I must have spent a thousand hours doing this. Even though my days are absolutely full to the brim managing children, a bustling farming/manufacturing business, and a household, I still spend the time to create The Sweet and Sour Variety Hour for no money.

This week I’ve included a snippet of some criticism levied against the corporate music machine (at 27 minutes), which illustrates some of the reasoning behind why this show is a part of my life and why I do it every week.

So, remember back when we were in elementary school and we made intentional mixtapes for our friends and crushes. Remember how much heart and mood was being translated through the music and remember that this is why so many of the volunteers at CHLY do what they do every week.

If you don’t give monthly to the radio station, but you are receiving the value nonetheless, please consider setting up a monthly donation here.

This is the file for this weeks show that you can download freely, and which shows up on the RSS feed that informs the podcast providers. It’s yours. Take it.

Summer Heat Wave

The Sweet and Sour Variety Hour, every Wednesday morning airs live to about 1.5 million human beings, a few billion notable sea creatures, and literally trillions of bacterium. Yes, every one of these living organisms will be surrounded with the invisible frequency transmission of these songs via terrestrial radio giant CHLY 101.7 FM at 8am PST on Wednesday.

Here is the program for this week, Wednesday July 21, 2021

If you didn’t know it, CHLY is listener-funded and the hosts are volunteers. Listener-funded means that since we aren’t taking major media conglomerate money, we aren’t beholden to supporting a consumer-capitalist narrative like all the other radio stations in this area are.

Every now and then, we ask you to pitch in some dollars so we can keep bringing you the independent content a well-informed public deserves.

We’ve made it easy to set up online, it only takes a few minutes.

We cannot live in a world informed by the corporate media only. We need independant, critical-thinking views and reporting through a financially-healthy community-based media like CHLY.
